Nagpur: It’s yet another red letter day for Nagpur in the field of academics, as local girl Arya Daoo topped the state in CBSE Std X board exam with a stellar performance of 99.4%. The student of Bharti Krishna Vidya Vihar (BKVV) now shares the top spot with three other students from Mumbai region.
The state-level merit list had another topper from Nagpur as Centre Point School’s (Amravati Road Bypass) Raghavi Shukla stormed into the elite academic club with a score of 99%. This academic achievement comes just a few days after Jain International School’s Sreyashi Saha secured second spot in Maharashtra with 98.4% in CBSE Std XII.
This back-to-back success now firmly establishes the fact that Nagpur schools are serious players in the CBSE landscape. Not that local CBSE schools needed any vindication, but for long, quantity over quality seemed to have prevailed. The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) era, under which schools had 70% marks in their hands, too raised doubts about evaluation practices. But with the traditional format of board exams back since last year, Nagpur schools have risen sharply with stellar performances by their students.
A principal told TOI that now CBSE schools will see ‘quality’ outperforming everything else. “CCE had diluted everything and practices of some schools in giving marks were most certainly questionable. Now, there is uniformity and this level playground will lead to a healthy competition,” she said.
Another principal agreed saying ‘flash in the pan’ schools era is now coming to end. “It’s like separating the wheat from the chaff. Schools that have been consistently performing well, though not producing city toppers, will see a gradual rise in academic performance till finally the breakthrough. Even if they are not in the top league next year, they will still have a heavy student presence in the 90% club. Under CCE across the country, you had schools springing up from nowhere and then again go back to oblivion,” she said. The principal summed it up saying, “The results that you see since 2018 are the ones that really reflect a school’s quality and performance. This is the real deal.”
For principals of state toppers, it was a proud day. Nagalakshmi Devi, principal of BKVV feels that achieving academic success is team work. “The hard work and dedication of Arya and her parents have resulted in such an achievement for her. She was in this school since fifth standard and since then she has been winning different competitions,” said Devi. But it is ultimately the perfect combination of a brilliant student and dedicated staff that produces results like these, says CPS (Amt Road Bypass) principal Radhika Mehra. “We work as a team and there are so many things that are done to ensure that the right kind of academic environment is created. And that includes extra curricular activities as well so that all aspects of a student’s personality is developed,” said Mehra.
