BMW had a rather difficult task of replacing the iconic E46 M3 CSL and it did with this car: the very rare E92 M3 GTS.

Compared to the standard E92 M3 and the previous special edition M3s, the GTS is way more track-focused, featuring a half cage, Perspex side and rear glasshouse, lighter door cards and a decluttered center console, saving a total of 75kg (165lbs).

But the biggest difference was under the bonnet, where the V8 engine was enlarged to 4.4 liters in capacity, producing 444hp (450PS) and 325lb-ft (440Nm) of torque. Paired to it is a seven-speed dual-clutch DCT transmission, which was the only choice.

Revisions to the chassis included a solid mounted rear subframe, new active dampers and way stronger brakes, solving one of the biggest issues the standard car had at the time. It was aggressive when new and still remains to that day, especially on a wet track like the one Carfection uses for its review.

The naturally aspirated V8 engine sounds angrier than ever while the stickier tires offer more grip and confidence, on a dry tarmac of course. 0-62mph (100km/h) came in 4.4 seconds and top speed was an unlimited 190mph (305km/h).

The Bavarians made just 150 E92 M3 GTSes in total, making this a very real unicorn in the BMW world. When new, it was seen as ridiculously expensive for the performance it offered but now, it poses like the pinnacle of naturally aspirated M3s.
