U.S. President Donald Trump said Special Counsel Robert Mueller should not have a chance to testify before Congress on his 21-month probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump on Twitter accused Democratic lawmakers of seeking a "redo" of Mueller's report.

"Bob Mueller should not testify.

No redos for the Dems!" Trump wrote.

Mueller's 400-plus-page report details Russian efforts to use social media and stolen Democratic documents to help Trump win the White House.

It also documents numerous contacts between Russians and Trump associates, and how members of the Trump campaign were enthusiastic about Moscow's efforts to harm Democrat Hillary Clinton.

It did not find evidence of a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow, and declined to conclude whether the president's efforts to impede the investigation constituted obstruction of justice.

No collusion, no obstruction.

It was a total hoax." The Republican president has derided the investigation as a costly "witch hunt" and sought to characterize the report's findings as a victory.

On Friday, he told reporters it was up to Attorney General William Barr to decide if Mueller should testify.

Barr, under fire from Democrats for his handling of the report's release, last week said he had no problem with Mueller testifying.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) EXCHANGE BETWEEN DEMOCRATIC SENATOR DICK DURBIN AND U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL WILLIAM BARR, SAYING: Durbin Sot: "Well at this point, what about Bob Mueller?

Should he be able to testify?" Barr Sot: "Well I've already said publicly.

I have no objection to him." Barr is headed for another showdown with Congress on Monday if he fails to meet a morning deadline to hand over the full, unredacted Mueller report requested by Democrats.

Some Democrats have called on Barr to resign, accusing him of protecting Trump by clearing the president of criminal obstruction and excusing actions that many view as evidence of misconduct.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week accused the A-G of lying to lawmakers and misrepresenting the Mueller report findings.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE NANCY PELOSI SAYING: "He lied to Congress.

He lied to Congress and if anybody else did that, it would be considered a crime." And many Democratic lawmakers now insist they must hear from Mueller directly.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives Judiciary Committee appears the closest to arranging for Mueller to testify, possibly as soon as May 15.
