The government will soon float a request for proposal (RFP), inviting firms for biomining of the accumulated waste in the yard and the scientific disposal of garbage generated in the future.
This follows the Local Administration Department being able to get a stay vacated on doing any activity at the Kurumbapet dumping yard. The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal in March had vacated a stay imposed by the NGT South Zone Bench, restricting any activity inside the garbage yard.
“Two RFPs will be floated very soon,” a senior Local Administration Department official told The Hindu.
The LAD has already set up a 1-tonne capacity biogas plant. “We are planning to use the methane gas produced from the plant to light the yard,” he said.
The LAD will also launch a major campaign soon to encourage people to adopt source segregation.
