An infant girl, suspected to be around four months old, was found dead in Sector 21 on Sunday morning. The police said the child had been buried underneath a mound of mud and her skull had injuries.

According to the police, the incident took place around 6am, when Bijender Singh, a security guard, was informed by a passerby of a dead body and he reported it to the police. Singh said, “Some dogs had gathered near the body. It is possible that the dogs attacked the infant after she was abandoned by someone.”

Nityanand, sub inspector (SI), Palam Vihar police station, said the autopsy was conducted in the evening. “The cause of death will be known once the report is out. We are contacting local hospital authorities to trace the infant’s parents,” SI Nityanand said.

The police said after conducting inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the code of criminal procedure, a case was registered under Section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons at Palam Vihar police station.

On January 21, a newborn girl had been found dead near a canal in Karan Ki Kherli village in Sadar Sohna.
