Samsung working on in-display camera tech to lose bezels completely: Report

However, according to a recent report by Chinese media channel MyDrivers, Samsung wants to do away with even that. How, you ask? It intends to put the selfie camera under the display, just like it did with the fingerprint scanner. As of today, the selfie camera is the only visible element on the front face of any regular smartphone without a pop-up camera. Most smartphones out there, even in the budget and mid-range segments, employ some sort of notch for the selfie camera because it's hard to accommodate it.

If the selfie camera too is tucked away under the display, a smartphone with a near 100-percent screen-to-body ratio must be possible in theory. "The screen camera technology can control the display screen, so that when the front camera is activated, the screen in the camera area will automatically become transparent, which is convenient for front camera framing. In other words, this technology will be similar to the existing screen fingerprint technology, and will achieve the effect through the transparency of the screen," reads the report.

According to GSMArena, this information first came from Yang Byung-duk, Vice President of the Display R&D group at Samsung. It has reportedly even been confirmed by the Korean media. Still, it's always best to take news like this with a pinch of salt. There's still no information available yet on which of Samsung's models will be the first to sport a camera technology like this or how far the Korean electronics company has come in its development. Until it hits the market, it's pop-up cameras and tiny circular notches for us all.
