CHENNAI: As National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (
NEET) was being held on Sunday,
parents waiting outside exams centres gave an idea of the money they had spent on coaching their wards.
Many of them said they were spending anywhere between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for coaching.
Gopi Krishnan, a parent from Sholinganallur, said his son Bhuvanesh scored 270 marks in NEET last year. “We got a
BDS seat. But he is interested only in
MBBS. So, we put him to coaching in an institute in Adyar. For a one-year coaching, we paid Rs 1 lakh as fee,” he said.
A private school in Mogappair, which offers NEET coaching along with regular board classes, brought their students in the school bus. “For academic training along with NEET coaching they are charging above Rs.2.8 lakh per year. But, other parents say the wards are clearing JEE (Main) and NEET exam from that school. So we have no problem,” a parent said.
Prabu, a retired employee, admitted his daughter for residential NEET coaching in Kancheepuram.
“For coaching and books, they charged Rs 1.2 lakh. For accommodation and food, I paid Rs 10,000 per month,” he said.
One of the top coaching institutes in Chennai has put out a notification for admitting students who have completed Class XII this year.
The total amount payable Rs.1.29 lakh with tax it is Rs 1.53 lakh. It is for only the course.
The centre also offers two years coaching for Class XI students. The fee for two-year coaching is Rs 2.93 lakh without tax and Rs 3.4 lakh with tax.
“For one year, the parent can pay in three instalments. For two years, they can pay in seven instalments,” an employee said.
