It was a day to remember for footy fan Jon Amos, who received a big hug and a game day ball from his favourite player James Harmes on Saturday. 

The star midfielder ran to the sidelines after the nail-biting match between Melbourne Football Club and Hawthorn to greet his biggest fan.

Amos, who was born with Down's Syndrome, could not contain his delight as Harmes embraced him and handed over the ball.

The heartwarming moment was widely shared by fans on social media. 

'@jamesharmes is my new favourite player. I’ve taken a while to decide since. Character and passion personified,' said one person.

 'Awww, Dee, makes me cry (again). Jon....he just shows everything we feel, uninhibited. He’s gorgeous. ...what a star. It’s these little things that make us all so much happier,' said another social media user.

Dee, Amos's sister, shared a video of Jon playing with the ball hours after the game ended. 

'The happiness continues and he's not letting that ball go. A great day in the life of Jon,' she said. 

Dee said the moment between her brother and Harmes has made their long-trip to Melbourne Cricket Ground worth it.

 'It's just made his night,' Ms Amos told 7NEWS.

'Jon woke me up first thing this morning, singing the club song and re-watching highlights online of the win'. 

Dee told how they had travelled from a remote part of Victoria to watch Melbourne beat the Hawks. 

This is not the first time Harmes and Amos have been captured on the camera. Fans were equally delighted when the star player gifted Amos his jersey and posed for a picture with him after a match.
