Is Australia set to host another Olympics? Sports chief set to urge Queensland to bid for the 2032 summer games

  • Olympics boss Thomas Bach is meeting Queensland officials in Brisbane
  • He is expected to urge southeast Queensland to bid for the 2032 Games
  • $5.3billion event could bring more than $22billion in economic uplift to region

Olympics boss Thomas Bach is expected to urge southeast Queensland to bid for the 2032 Games when he sits down with local mayors.

The meeting at Brisbane City Hall would serve as a 'casual intro' to the city and region for the International Olympic Committee president, the Australian Olympic Committee says.

Bach will be accompanied by AOC president John Coates when he sits down with two representatives of the region's 10 councils - Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson - and former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk.

'It's an opportunity for all parties to discuss what would be involved for any potential bid,' an AOC spokesman told AAP.

A feasibility study published in February forecast $900 million of state and federal funds would be needed to help stage the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

That figure was given in 2018 terms, meaning it's expected to balloon once rising costs and 14 years of inflation are factored in.

The study also found southeast Queensland lacks 40 per cent of the venues required for the world's largest sporting event including an adequate stadium for hosting athletics and the opening ceremony.

The $5.3 billion event could bring more than $22 billion in economic uplift to the region, similar to that delivered by the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the study said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has previously backed the bid, provided it had the public's support and costs were kept to a minimum.
