PATIALA: Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Rajpreet Singh, who is now being grilled by the special investigating team (SIT), had plans to flee the country for which he had approached a Patiala-based immigration agent on April 3, five-day after he along with ASI Joginder Singh siphoned off Rs 6.65 crore from the recovery made by from Father Anthony Madassery’s house in Jalandhar on March 29.
Rajpreet had approached the immigration agent and handed him Rs 2 lakh in cash asking him to initiate the process so that he along with his wife could migrate to
Canada. He had also asked the agent to help his wife crack ILETS exam that would facilitate their legal migration.
The matter came to light late Saturday evening when immigration agent Gurjant Singh appeared before the Patiala SSP MS Sidhu and informed him about Rs 2 lakh that had been paid to him by Rajpreet.
Such was the largesse shown by Rajpreet that he did not even ask the total money that would be required for them to get Canadian visa. Instead, he told Gurjant that he should keep Rs 2 lakh and if needed he would pay him more.
Gurjant told the cops that Rajpreet wanted his wife of four months to clear ILETS so that the two could shift to Canada. He was produced before the SIT chief, who was also in Patiala on Saturday following the recovery that had been made.
Sidhu confirmed that the immigration agent had turned up before the cops and informed them about the Rs 2 lakh that had been paid to him. It is being believed that this money was also a part of the Rs 6.65 crore that he along with Joginder Singh had siphoned off. “He told the cops that after reading about the two ASIs, he had decided to inform the police about the money paid to him by Rajpreet.”
The SSP said while they have recorded his statement Gurjant has not been asked to join the investigations and he was let off, later in the evening.
