CHANDIGARH: The UT police on Friday arrested 18 members of Punjab and UT employees and pensioners action committee from at Sector 43 bus stand for obstructing police work and rioting.
Members of Punjab and UT employees and pensioners action committee, along with Punjab subordinate service federation, had been sitting on dharna at ISBT 43, Chandigarh for the last three days. Sajjan Singh, 88, a retired employee, was sitting on fast unto death since May 1.
Cops said that Sajjan Singh’s health was getting deteriorated and he needed immediate medical attention. He was not ready to go to the hospital, so a team of medical doctors from GMSH-16 was deputed for his checkup. Doctor after examining him stated his condition to be critical.
When the cops shifted Sajjan Singh in an ambulance to admit him to GMSH-16, hundreds of members of unions got aggressive, blocked the way of the ambulance and started raising slogans. Later, protesters parked their vehicles at the entrance of the bus stand because of which main road got jammed and the public had to face inconvenience.
All station house officers from the nearby police stations reached the spot and tried to convince the employees. When they did not agree, police rounded up 38 protesters and later registered FIRs against 18 protesters. The protesters were demanding to implement sixth pay commission concessions, regularisations of daily wagers and contractual employees of various departments.
Later, the cops got successful in taking Sajjan Singh to hospital. Cops said that such incidences should be dealt with strictness.
