Nine-man Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for Champions League football was rocked on Saturday after Nathan Ake’s last-gasp winner punished red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth and condemned Spurs to a 1-0 Premier League defeat at Bournemouth.
South Korea forward Son was sent off for a needless push in the closing moments of the first half and Argentine defender Foyth saw red for a studs-up lunge soon after the interval, barely two minutes after entering the field as a half-time substitute.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked like it would hold on for a point as the match entered stoppage-time, but Bournemouth defender Ake ended third-placed Tottenham’s stubborn resistance to delay its attempt to guarantee a place in the Premier League’s top four.
Tottenham’s ninth defeat in its last 15 games in all competitions means it needs to wait for Sunday’s results to see if it has to win its final Premier League game of the season at home to Everton on May 12.
Fourth straight win
Everton kept its slim hopes of a top-seven finish in the Premier League alive with a fourth consecutive victory at Goodison Park by defeating Burnley on Friday.
The Toffees have seen off Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United on their patch recently — by an aggregate score of 7-0 — and two goals in three first-half minutes proved decisive against the Clarets.
Burnley defender Ben Mee got a telling final touch to Richarlison’s strike while Seamus Coleman headed in on the rebound as Everton ran out 2-0 winners in both sides’ penultimate fixture of the campaign.
The win moved Everton up to eighth and to within a single point of Wolves in seventh — a position that will seal a Europa League berth next season if Manchester City beat Watford in the FA Cup final later this month.
Ronaldo saves Juve
Cristiano Ronaldo scored late as Juventus dented Torino’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League with a 1-1 draw in Serie A on Friday.
Torino looked set to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Superga air disaster by beating Juventus following Sasa Lukic’s first-half goal, but Ronaldo levelled six minutes from time.
Torino remained sixth, two points below fourth-place Atalanta for the final Champions League berth, ahead of the rest of the weekend’s games. Juventus has already won its eighth consecutive league title.
Torino took the lead in the 18th minute after Lukic muscled Miralem Pjanic off the ball on a Juventus throw-in and curled into the far side of the net for his first goal for the club.
Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben made a return to action on Saturday as Bayern Munich heaped the pressure on Bundesliga title rival Borussia Dortmund with a 3-1 win over Hanover.
The veteran wingers, both of whom are set to end their Bayern careers at the end of the season, returned from injury as Bayern made heavy weather of a crucial victory over the Bundesliga’s bottom club.
