Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a 77-year-old jeweller was beaten by his salesman who looted jewellery worth 1.5 crores, catching the owner unawares during the lunch break.
This incident occurred in Mahim where the owner of Abhishek Jewellers, Bastimal Jain, was beaten inside his shop by his salesman, Naresh Purohit and escaped with Rs. 85 lakh worth of jewellery. Currently, Jain who is still in a shock is said to have been admitted to a private hospital.
On Thursday at around 2:30pm, Jain closed his shop from inside, to have lunch along with his salesman Naresh Purohit. After sometime, Purohit suddenly opened the shutter from inside, allowing his accomplice to enter the shop. Before Jain could realise, Purohit and his friend started beating up Jain.
After beating him, they tied his hands and legs with a rope, stuffed a handkerchief in his mouth, locked him in the bathroom and fled from the shop, stealing the jewellery. While leaving the shop, they fled with the CCTV DVR, to ensure they don’t get caught. Jain managed to spit out handkerchief and shouted for help. He was then helped by passersby.
“Purohit was a resident of Rajasthan and was working in Abhishek Jewellers since the last eight to ten months. We did find Naresh suspicious many times and it seems he was conspiring on this plan since a long time. The minute he got an opportunity, he ha shown his true colours,” said Gajendra, son of Jain.
Gajendra is currently on a holiday to Nepal and said, “As soon as I learnt of this theft, I have changed my tickets and I am now flying back to India by tomorrow.” Mahim police has registered a case under various sections of the Indian penal code (IPC), for robbery theft by a servant (392) of and is looking for Purohit. The crime branch has also started a parallel probe.
