A community service programme aimed at reaching the marginalised sections of the society was launched by Velammal Educational Trust here on Saturday.
The programme, with focus on southern districts, will provide a host of community services, from identifying meritorious students, to creating awareness of career options among students and extending medical facilities to villages. With a view to creating employment, jobless youths would be engaged. “Our aim is to reach the grass roots level,.” said M.V. Muthuramalingam, Chairman of Velammal Educational Trust. He said jobs were aplenty, but one must to raise his standards to increase employability.
In his special address, retired IPS officer A. Kaliyamoorthy said discipline was the key to success. Encouraging students to read books and make use of libraries, he said it was books that shaped great minds like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. It was important for students not to neglect their parents once they settled down in life. “Parents live for the success of their children. Don’t let them down,” he said.
Launching the programme, R. Subramania Kumar, MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank, said focus and practice would make a student a perfectionist. Students should not be disheartened by setbacks. “It will take multiple attempts to succeed. Don’t give up,” he said. Hard work and desire to achieve were important for success in life, he said. Vice-Chairman of the trust Ganesh Natarajan proposed the vote of thanks.
