MOHALI:
Mohali police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the robbery that took place at a jeweller’s house on Thursday.
SIT is probing the case under the supervision of superintendent of police (SP), investigation, Varun Sharma. Four armed robbers held a family hostage in their house at Victoria Enclave in Peer Muchalla and fled with Rs 4 lakh in cash and jewellery.
The actual amount of cash and jewellery is yet to be ascertained. Sources said the amount could go up to crores as the accused left the house with four bags full of cash and jewellery.
Besides SP, investigation, the other members in SIT include DSP, Derabassi, DSP, special branch, in charge of the crime investigating agency (CIA) and station house officer of Dhakoli police station.
The police have, however, failed to get any clue so far.
On the other hand, the police investigation into the robbery case may open up a can of worms for the jeweller as the police have started investigation with betting angle.
SSP Harcharan Singh Bhular said they were investigating betting angle into the case. The police are suspecting that the heist may be linked to cricket match betting. Source said the jeweller was allegedly involved in cricket match betting.
Jeenu Verma, 34, wife of Rakesh Verma, a wholesale jeweller, stated in her complaint to the police that she was teaching her children along with the neighbour’s children when a man rang the doorbell.
She told him that he came at a wrong address. But, in the meanwhile, three more men barged into the house and showed them some weapon and threatened them. They later tied them with a tape and ransacked the entire house and flee with Rs 3.5 lakh cash.
The police said there were conflicting versions between the jeweller and his wife about the amount of robbery. Therefore, the police are also questioning them. A senior police official said they were questioning the jewellar to verify the facts stated in the complaint.
