Coimbatore: The civic body on Saturday seized 3,251kg banned plastic items from 156 shops in the city and collected a total of Rs 39,500 as fine from the errant shopkeepers.
City corporation officials also conducted raids at non woven bags manufacturing companies such as SR non woven bags at Ganapathy, RV non woven bags at Kurichi, Surbe Enterprises at Singanallur, Five Fingers NonWovens on Vellalore Road and La Tierra non woven at Ganapthy based on a complaint that many manufacturers were selling banned non woven bags as cotton bags to traders and public.
The raid was conducted in addition to the regular inspections being carried out in the shops for the past two weeks following complaints on rampant use of banned plastic items in the city, a city corporation official said.

Till date, the civic body has inspected more than 17,183 shops and seized 11,647kg banned plastics. The penalty collected from violators so far stands at Rs 10.74 lakh.
The officials, meanwhile, urged the public to share information on the use or manufacturing of banned plastic items in the city to the officials at the zonal corporation offices or the main corporation office at Town Hall.
