‘Local leaders can decide alliance for ULB polls’

The State Congress has left the choice of striking an alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) for the elections to 63 urban local bodies (ULBs) to local-level leaders.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters here on Friday that the party’s district and local leaders had been given the powers to decide the necessity of entering into an alliance with the JD(S).

Local leaders and candidates can either contest elections independently or enter into an alliance with non-BJP parties, he said.

The elections to 63 ULBs — eight city municipal councils, 33 town municipal councils and 22 town panchayats — are scheduled for May 29.
