PATNA: Gold ornaments worth Rs82 lakh along with a smuggled liquor bottle was seized from one Sanjay Kumar (56) when he was travelling in a three-wheeler from
Patna Junction to Boring Road around 5pm on Friday. Sanjay works at a
jewellery shop in Bakarganj area in the city.
City SP Prantosh Kumar Das said Sanjay was nabbed during the vehicle checking drive near Income Tax roundabout under the Kotwali police station area. He lives at Begumpur under the Chowk police station area in Patna City.
“The 3.11kg of gold jewellery is estimated to be worth at least Rs82 lakh,” he said.
The SP said a routine vehicle checking was going on with a team of Election Commission when a three-wheeler carrying several passengers was stopped. When the police team searched the bags of passengers, the jewellery and a liquor bottle were recovered from Sanjay’s bag.
“An FIR was lodged with the Kotwali police station in this connection. Income Tax officers were informed,” Das said.
Kotwali SHO Ramashankar Singh said Sanjay had reached Patna from Delhi by a train and was going to Boring Road when he was arrested. “He did not reveal where in Boring Road area he was going to deliver the jewellery,” he said, adding four more persons — Pranav Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Vishal Saurav and Lakhindar Manjhi — were also arrested with liquor during the checking at Income Tax roundabout.
