The department of animal husbandry has initiated a project to utilise cow dung in a farm in Sattari, around 50 km from Panaji, to convert it into electricity. “It will be a pilot project in which the target is to produce 10 mw power. Once commissioned, it will be connected to the grid,” an official said.
He said a new indigenous technology would be used for the purpose. Currently, as the cow dung is going awaste, there was a proposal to utilise it as a source of electricity from the methane generated during the process.
Two years ago, the garbage treatment plant at Saligao has started producing electricity, which connected to the grid.
