Shopping for endless outfits for your children is a chore, and the prices often rack up when you find yourself in and out of shops like Kmart and Target.

But one clever mum has devised a simple strategy that means she only has to shop for outfits for her two children twice a year - at the start of summer and the start of winter.

Rachael Hallett, from Melbourne, subscribes to a formula that's similar to a 'capsule wardrobe' - insofar as she only purchases a small amount of clothes that both fit and co-ordinate her two boys.

What are Rachael's clothes shopping secrets?

* Rachael creates a capsule wardrobe for her kids' clothes by buying a certain amount of pieces that fit both her boys and co-ordinate with everything.

* She said she will theme what she buys around one colour, like navy, so she can mix and match colours.

* Rachael said that by doing two bulk buys a year, she saves money and it means less washing for her.

* Typically, Rachael will buy something like twelve tops, two coats, eight pants, six jumpers, six pajamas, eight day care outfits, one pair of gumboots, sandals, sneakers and slippers each, plus a dressing gown each and socks and underwear.

Rachael said her method works well because it leads to less mess and money wastage - and it also means less washing for her.

'This is pretty much all the clothing my [two] kids have,' she captioned a photo of her children's clothes spread out on a kitchen table.

The snap included twelve tops, two coats, eight pants, six jumpers, six pajamas, eight day care outfits, one pair of gumboots, sandals, sneakers and slippers each plus a dressing gown each and socks and underwear.

'My kids are close in age so this season they have all the same size and will share the wardrobe completely,' Rachael said.

The mum-of-two said she typically shops at H&M, but this year she extended her reach to include Target, Kmart, Big W and Best and Less.

'Now, I don't have to shop for another six months,' Rachael wrote, proudly.

Speaking about the questions she is most commonly asked, Rachael said there are many advantages to her shopping method insofar as she never gets overrun with washing (pictured: where she stores her boys' clothes)

Speaking about the questions she is most commonly asked, Rachael said there are many advantages to her shopping method.

'The first is I can wash weekly - and it all fits in one to two loads,' she said.

'This does not result in more washing, this means my washing can never get out of control.'

Similarly, the busy mother said she uses 'self control' in not buying more clothes, even if she wants to.

Rachael said she has been trying the approach since the birth of her first son and has no regrets around how effective it is.

Rachael also shared how she stores her clothes for her two boys, in a container with each wardrobe item marked up.

'This is how I currently sort them for autumn,' she said. 'The layout changes every so often when their requirements change.

'When I change to the winter set up we obviously won't need shorts and they also won't need undersuits or bibs anymore.'

She said she has used the setup as her change table for the past four years as well.

'I really recommend this set up to anyone with kids in nappies,' she said.

Parents online were incredibly impressed with Rachael's shopping and capsule wardrobe idea.

'I love this idea. I wish I'd done it when my four kids were little!,' one mother posted.

'Fantastic! I'm forever drowning in washing and can’t find what I'm looking for because there's too much clothing!,' another said.

'This is genius!,' a third added.
