Three persons, including two members of the flying squad drafted to enforce the Election Code of Conduct, were arrested on Tuesday on the charge of taking ₹15 lakh from a person carrying cash in a car on April 7. They were remanded to judicial custody.
According to in-charge Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Ramachandra, the flying squad members -- Gandhala Mohan Singh, a senior assistant in the DEO’s office, and Maligapogu Ramesh, a police constable -- intercepted the car and checked it for cash. The two along with the flying squad vehicle driver allegedly took ₹15 lakh from the person carrying the cash.
A sum of ₹80 lakh was being transported in the car by one B. Chandrasekhar Reddy and it allegedly belonged to a relative of Nandikotkur YSRCP candidate. The two allegedly took the amount promising no further police action.
Takes a turn
However, the case took a turn when Chandrasekhar Reddy lodged a complaint that the two intercepted his car and took away the cash by cheating him.
When questioned about the legality of carrying ₹80 lakh during elections, the in-charge DSP told The Hindu on Wednesday that action would be taken against Reddy as well. “We have written to the SP who will forward it to Collector S. Satyanarayana. The Collector would alert the I-T Department,” said the in-charge DSP. The three were arrested at B. Tandrapadu and ₹7.97 lakh was recovered from them.
