Logan mayor allegedly crashed into tree, charged with drunk driving
Suspended Logan mayor Luke Smith spent the night in the watchhouse after allegedly crashing into a parked car and palm tree while almost triple legal blood-alcohol limit.
Mr Smith and seven other Logan councillors were charged with fraud by the Crime and Corruption Commission last Friday in relation to an alleged plot to sack the council’s former chief executive Sharon Kelsey.
It will be alleged Mr Smith was driving a Honda CRV on Edenlea Drive in the Logan suburb of Meadowbrook about 4.30pm on Wednesday when he crashed into a parked car.
Police said the car then mounted the kerb and hit a palm tree.
It will also be alleged the 49-year-old reversed onto the road and his front left wheel snapped off.
He was taken into custody and allegedly returned a blood-alcohol level of .139.
Mr Smith was charged with middle-range drink driving, driving without due care and attention as well as breaching his bail conditions.
Police held him in custody overnight because of the breach of bail charge and he was due to face Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday.
