Federal Election 2019 LIVE: Tony Abbott and Zali Steggall go head-to-head in Warringah debate

Warringah MP of 25 years Tony Abbott faces off with rival independent Zali Steggal in their first debate ahead of election day.

Tony Abbott starts with warning on Canberra

Tony Abbott's opening remarks have focussed on the Warringah tunnel and the importance of a "strong government in Canberra".

He's also mentioned franking credits, which got a clap from the audience. But they weren't so keen on his comment that "a protest vote in Warringah will give you a Labor government in Canberra". 

Zali Steggall begins

Zali Steggall has opened the debate saying it's an exciting time for Warringah to make a change. "We have a chance to choose."

She has stressed the importance of addressing climate change and the fact that she is a local.

"I know what it's like to commute to the city, to balance your work and life and family arrangements," she said.
