NEW DELHI:
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has managed to stop the
second marriage of a man who had
abandoned his
wife allegedly after the birth of their daughter two years ago.
In her complaint to DCW, Manju, a resident of Burari, said she had got married to Akash, from Nepal, six years ago, but his family used to harass her for dowry from the beginning. She claimed that the family had thrown her out of the house and asked her to go back to her parents even when she was pregnant.
Once her daughter was born, the family snapped all ties. She managed to go to Nepal alone with her baby, but the family again started abusing her for dowry, Manju claimed.
She tried reconciling with her husband but he threw her out of his house, but neither gave her a divorce nor paid for her expenses. A few days ago, after learning that Akash was getting remarried, Manju approached DCW.
DCW member Promila Gupta contacted KI Nepal, an NGO working on women’s rights. The NGO, along with the police of Beerganj district, reached Akash’s house and stopped the wedding. DCW is now helping Manju file a case of domestic violence and dowry harassment against her husband.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “Though there is a law against domestic violence, its implementation is terrible in India and the neighbouring countries as it gets least priority from law enforcement agencies.”
