“Maybe there is a story there,” says Joe Russo about the future of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or so it seems. After Cap received his seemingly happy ending by the end of Avengers Endgame, Russo has teased that those who were thinking this was it for actor Chris Evans in the MCU may be mistaken.

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality,” Joe said, adding, “The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?” “Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking,” he told EW.

Joe and Anthony Russo also confirmed that Captain America’s long time friend Bucky Barnes (essayed by Sebastian Stan) was aware of his life-altering decision.“Especially when he says goodbye,” Joe explained. “He says, ‘I’ll miss you.’ Clearly he knows something.” Meanwhile, Bucky tells Sam (Falcon) to go to old Cap and ask him whatever he needs to. Sam will ask the questions that Bucky already has answers for.

Old Cap also asks Falcon how it feels when he gave him his shield, who replies it feels like it’s someone else’s. If you remember, Thanos had destroyed Cap’s shield in the final battle so the old cap has definitely brought this shield from the past or the alternate reality. So when it says it isn’t someone else’s shield, he could also mean that it belonged to another Captain America from another universe.

Maybe that Falcon was already Captain America in that universe or maybe he perished in a fight and his shield was brought to this reality. With this shield, Falcon could finally become the next Captain America.
