The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has clarified that there are no indications of abnormal rainfall and associated floods anywhere in Karnataka.

In response to reports appearing in sections of the media about predictions of heavy rainfall and associated natural calamity in Kodagu and Kerala, Director of KSNDMC G.S. Srinivasa Reddy attributed the heavy rainfall in Kodagu and Kerala last year to “uneven distribution”.

The rainfall occurring in Kodagu last week is part of pre-monsoon showers, which is normally associated with thunderstorms.

Referring to the relationship drawn between volcanic activity elsewhere and the rainfall here in the media reports, Mr. Reddy said the same is yet to be established through scientific research. The rainfall in Kodagu last week was neither unusual nor linked to any volcanic activity, he said.

“KSNDMC is monitoring the entire State (every gram panchayat) for variations in weather and rainfall and will issue forecast, early warning related to any natural calamity related to weather and geological activity”, Mr. Reddy said in a statement

He said there was no need for people to panic based on unverifiable statements appearing in sections of the media. “People can always contact KSNDMC for updates on weather and rainfall”, the statement said. KSNDMC can be accessed on https://www.ksndmc.org/
