Jawan killed, two injured as CAPF personnel on poll duty opens fire in Howrah

The deceased jawan has been identified as Bholanath Das.

A jawan of the central force was killed and two others sustained bullet injuries during firing at Bagnan in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Thursday.

According to reports, personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) had assembled at one of the camps in Howrah ahead of polling in the Lok Sabha polls scheduled on May 6. Police said that Assam Rifles jawan Lakshmikant Barman allegedly opened fire at the other police personnel present in the premises.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Bholanath Das.

The injured have been identified as Anil Rajbanshi and Rantu Mani. Both the injured have been shifted to the hospital for treatment. The accused has been taken into custody.

The Election Commission has been deploying central forces for the seven phase elections in Bengal. In the fifth phase of polls in the state scheduled on May 6, the Commission has plans to deploy 578 companies of central forces.
