Cyclone makes its presence felt in Hyderabad

Cyclone Fani has made its arrival felt for a brief while in Hyderabad. The rainfall on Wednesday late afternoon which lasted for around 15 minutes is because of outer band (consisting of rain clouds) of the cyclone which got swept towards Telangana, said scientists from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad.

While people from the city hoped there will be respite from sweltering heat, the rain, with wind lasted only for a brief while in Begumpet, Koti, Himayatnagar, Banjara Hills, Somajiguda, and other parts of the city. Though it might not rain, there might be some respite from the high temperatures. Scientist-D at IMD-Hyderabad, Dr K Nagaratna said that Thursday and Friday could be cloudy because of the outer band clouds. "The temperatures will come down but people will sweat because of humidity. The heat will shoot up again after the cyclone fades away," Dr Nagaratna said. The scientists said that the cyclone is moving alongside of coast of Andhra Pradesh and that it will make landfall in Odisha coast. In the neighbouring Telugu State, it rained in places alongside coast, including Visakhapatnam.

Usually, when high temperatures are recorded, air becomes light and moves upwards. Humidity in it condenses -- which forms into clouds called, cumulonimbus clouds, leading to thunderstorms and rains.

Though temperatures have been shooting up in Telangana from past a few days, the hot days are not followed by rains. Dr Nagaratna said that when there is no moisture in air, there will no condensation or formation of clouds. "There might be only dry thunderstorms and lightening," she said.

Drop in temperature

The highest temperature in Telangana has dropped from 45.3 degrees C on Tuesday to 44.3 degrees C on Wednesday. The highest of 44.3 degrees in Adilabad was followed by 43.6 degrees C in Nizamabad and 43.2 in Medak.

In case of Hyderabad, the temperatures have increased from 40.8 degrees C on Tuesday to 41.6 degrees C on Wednesday. IMD-Hyderabad scientists said that temperatures across the State will drop from June first week, when monsoons arrive.
