'Heart-wrenching': Pedestrian killed in cement truck crash in Sydney's north

An elderly woman has died after being struck by a cement truck in Sydney's north on Thursday morning.

Two pedestrians, a man and woman both aged in their 80s, were struck by the truck on Willoughby Road in Crows Nest just after 11am, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

NSW Ambulance inspector Carolyn Parish said paramedics arrived to find the woman trapped under the truck with "catastrophic injuries".

She said paramedics did "everything they could" to save the woman, however she died at the scene.

"The scene was quite stressful and traumatic for all emergency services, quite heart-wrenching for paramedics particularly," Ms Parish said.

The ambulance inspector said the other pedestrian, believed to be the woman's husband, was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable with cuts and abrasions.

The male driver of the truck was also taken to Royal North Shore in "significant shock", where he will undergo mandatory testing.

Ms Parish said the scene was "very distressing", and support services have been offered to paramedics who attended the incident.

"It's probably one of the more traumatic scenes I’ve attended to recently," she said.

Buses through Crows Nest were being diverted due to the crash, with 13 stops missed along routes 257 and 343.
