Hoisting of flags in party offices, rallies and distribution of welfare assistance marked May Day celebrations here on Wednesday.
Workers affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions and All India Trade Union Congress hoisted their respective flags at the party offices and workplaces.
While CITU workers, under the leadership of Sudha Sundararaman, took out a rally in the evening, the AITUC members, led by Mari Christopher and Sethu Selvam, held a march in the town.
Veteran CPI (M) leader T. Murugan participated in the May Day celebrations of Indian Coffee House workers.
As a mark of protest, a large number of employees working in textile mills, public sector undertakings and cooperative societies held a demonstration wearing black badges near the New Bus Stand.
The employees have been fighting for their salary for the last several months.
