Barack and Michelle Obama have revealed that they will be producing shows, under their production company Higher Ground, for a popular online streaming channel. Their project includes a documentary series based on author Michael Lewis' book
The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy. According to reports, the show will aim at portraying "the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation”.
The production company Higher Ground is working on seven projects which are acquisitions of both fiction to non-fiction works. The content is aimed at adults and at children, according to a report by the Guardian.
Some of their other projects are-- 'a biopic of the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, based on David W Blight’s Pulitzer-winning book
Prophet of Freedom, a pre-school series called
Listen to Your Vegetables and Eat Your Parents about food, a scripted anthology series based on the New York Times column
Overlooked and a drama series,
Bloom set in the world of fashion in postwar New York,' reads a report by The Bookseller.
Meanwhile, it is noted that the first show slated by the Obama production company is American Factory, acquired from the Sundance Festival. It is an acclaimed documentary which explores the sequence of events that happen after a Chinese billionaire starts a factory in Ohio.
Talking about their production company, Barack Obama said in a statement as reported by Rolling Stone, “We created Higher Ground to harness the power of storytelling. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited about these projects...Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
The projects by Obama's production house will be released over a period of the next few years.
