Rallies and meetings by trade unions marked the Labour Day in the district on Wednesday.
The members of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the labour wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), took out processions in Malavalli and Mandya before holding public events.
Former MLA G.V. Srirama Reddy inaugurated the rally in Malavalli and later addressed the CITU members. He criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government for “adopting anti-labour policies.” The Centre has been snatching the labourers’ rights besides helping the corporate sector, he alleged. All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) district president Devi, Susheela, Puttamadegowda, CITU district president G. Ramakrishna and others were present.
In Mandya, ‘Rajya Adivanavasigala Samanvaya Samiti’ State convener S.Y. Gurushanth demanded social security benefits and equal pay for equal work to the workers. CITU members from all over the district attended the programme.
