A mother who let her dog's cancerous mass grow until it weighed 600g said she had to choose between the vet bill and feeding her kids.

Pamela Preece, from Port Noarlunga South, Adelaide, pleaded guilty to ill-treating her Staffie/Mastiff cross Lucifer between April and August last year.

On Thursday she told Christies Beach Magistrates Court that she didn't have the dog's painful groin cancer treated because of the cost.

Ms Preece is a single mother of four said she was going to take Lucifer to the vet once she was paid, reported The Advertiser.

She said the dog had been part of the family for nine years and showed no signs of illness and was 'still playing' as normal.

Ms Preece faced Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to ill-treating the dog between April and August 2018.

Magistrate Sue O'Connor said: 'This dog had necrotic fluid leaking out of its genitals — there's only so much playing a dog in that situation will do.'

The case has been adjourned until June as further evidence will be presented.

Ms Preece could face a maximum fine of $20,000 or two years in jail.
