ááácandaceáá}we are counting down to the kentucky derby each day this week.... today, taylor trache joins us with part 2 of her racing series...taylor tuesday you focused on training these equine athletes...but what else goes into horse racing?

ááátayloráá}there are a lot of factors in training a horse...but for a race horse to make it to a stage as big as the kentucky derby-- it takes more than a training regimen....there's of course pedigree and a good confirmation...but the horse has to be a little special.... [take :pkgduration:3:01] ááápkgáá}<nats horses galloping and derby karen falgoust- owner darling farms"my dad would always say..it's not the money, it's the win,..."derby nats"we are coming down to the wire...he's just awesome...justify wins the kentucky derby!!!!"carrol castille- owner whispering oaks farms:"derby week you know...it's the hall of fame week for horse racing...the whole world is watching....there's just something about having a horse and watching him come down the stretch and being in the lead and all that...it's just an adrenaline rush compared to no other "the best of the best...."you'll see the top trainors...the top jockeys...the top horses...all travel to churchill downs hoping to win the derby or the many lead-up races....take super steve:"you figure there's 10,000 horses born each year...100 run that day... you better be good to be competitng that day"and not just any horse can race during derby week.carrol-"it takes a very special horse, it's very competitive.

There's no magic to it, it's just a lot of preparedness take super carrol and knowing the bloodlines and the pedigrees and trying to cross the right bloodlines to get a good pedigree"steve- "talent mostly comes from pedigree and you try to get the best pedigree you can.

That way you can get a chance at getting the same talent..."

In order to make it to one of the most prestigous horse races in the country...the winning horse needs more than just talent...take karen super karen falgoust- owner darling farms-"some of these horses have a lot more heart than others...and have that competitive edge...yeah these horses have the "it factor"" steve flint:"if you don't have that ticker...that something that's a little extra that when everything's against ya and youre fighting it out...you have to be that one little percent...that can give that little extra and that helps a ton."natseven then- a horse could look the part, go the distance, make great time on the track but there's also an important bond needing to form...nats"it's very important for the jockey to know the horse and the horse to know the jockey because he knows what the horse can do."

"they have to really develop a bond and trust between each other to get the maximum effort...i've seen the best jockeys in the world ride the best horses and get the worst results..."nat"you know it as soon as you put the jockey on if they fit...and if they don't you know..."the kentucky derby is something every horse owner, trainer and jockey dream of winning...."you have to be blessed....i had two chances to get to the derby and both horses got hurt...and it killed me...it devastated me."but to win sometimes all you need is a whole lot of luck "success in the horse business is rare...it's few and far between"" some go 30 40 years and never get one there."nats"it's tough....but i'd do it all over again and if i won the derby...i'd be happy...it would all be worth it...that's the only thing that keeps me going...is to have that one shot."> ááátayloráá}local farm, whispering oaks has some horses up at churchhll downs this week...their filly, she's a julie will actually be racing in the grade 1 stakes race la troienne ....which is a pretty big race almost to the level of the derby or the
