For most students, how to pay for school is a major consideration.

Student loan debt is a one- and- a- half trillion dollar financial cris in america.

The average household with student debt owes more than 47-thousand dollars.

Mark strassmann examines the issue in a special cbs news series, "life and debt.

College changed taylor smith's life for the better.

College debt changed it for the worse.

Now 25, this sales rep for a houston tech company feels pressured by loans she started taking out as a college- bound high school senior.

You were eightteen& uh-huh.

People were loaning you tens of thousands of dollars.// exactly.

And nobody's talking to you about it either.//or the consequences.

When smith graduated from texas a&m, she owed 53- thousand dollars in student loans.

She quit her first job, registering voters in colorado.

It didn't pay enough... i sacrificed the dream job to come home so i could take care of my bills.//that was a big reality check realizing//this bill that i have is what's gonna hold me back.

43 million americans currently have student debt.

On average, they owe more than 47-thousand dollars.

Five- point-two million are in default.

And college costs keep rising.

For example, at ohio state, a public university, in- state students pay around 27- thousand dollars a year.

An elite private schools like stanford costs about 74- thousand dollars.

When you get that letter, it is am i going to school or not?

And if i am going to school i will need to take on more debt that i can possibly fathom.

Seth frotman's the executive director of the student borrower protection center, a non- profit watchdog.

And the crisis is multi- generational.

Seraphina galante is 76.

This career social worker got her graduate degree in her 50's.

She graduated with about 35- thousand dollars in debt - and owes more than that nineteen years later, 38- thousand dollars&partly because she can't even afford to pay the total interest every month.

"i was one of th oldest students."

Senior borrowers like her are the fastest-growing group of the student debt cris.

It's not every gonna reduce, ever.//and the emotional part of it is that it's there.

That it's always gonna be there.

Seraphina gallant told us she will die owing money to her college loan lenders, while taylor smith put east mississippi community college is rebranding its program that can help students with some tuition costs.

The new name will be tuition assistance program, rather than tuition guarantee.

Emcc's foundation will spearhead the fundraising efforts.

Right now, a variety of organizations give to ensure students from specific counties are helped, but those sources aren't as plentiful as they once were.

"sometimes the federa financial aid just isn't enough or they many not qualify and they need that little bit of extra help to meet the bill that's required to be paid to go to school here."

The six counties in emcc's district budget money to give to the community college but those funds go to the general fund, not tuition assistance.

Some lessons are even more important because of the teacher.

For as long as 18-year-old davion lee can remember&he's dreamed of soaring high.

I looked up and saw an airplane said "mom i' gonna fly that one day."/ it's just been a passion that grew in me ever since.

Now, pilot jerome stanislaus is taking him under his wing.

Growing up, stanislaus also found an interest in flying& but he didn't have the same guidance.

Told myself that i would never probably be a pilot because i actually never saw a pilot that looked like myself.

Just over two and a half percent of aircraft pilots and flight engineers are african-american according to bureau of labor statistics.

So last year, stanislaus started giving free flights... often to kids of color.

Aviation is just it's a very expensive career to get into// it is definitely a barrier.

He's part of fly for the culture, a non-profit that promotes inclusion in aviation.

When you take a kid up for the first time and see their reaction.
