Elderly man charged with murder after woman found dead at nursing home
An elderly man has been charged with murder after a woman aged in her 80s was found dead at an aged care home in Melbourne's outer-east.
Police were called to Martin Luther Homes on Mount View Road in The Basin where the 87-year-old woman was found dead about 12.40pm on Wednesday.
A man, 88, was arrested at the scene and later charged with one count of murder.
He will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Homicide squad detectives were at the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
The woman lived in the facility's independent retirement village, Martin Luther Homes confirmed.
"The sad passing of a woman who lived in our independent living retirement village today has saddened all our staff, residents and families," a statement said.
"On behalf of everyone at Martin Luther Homes, we extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends."
The home is cooperating with police.
Martin Luther Homes largely cares for German residents, and falls under the Lutheran Church.
It provides 114 beds for residential aged care, as well as 35 units, 16 apartments and one serviced apartment for independent living, according to its charity registration.
The provider won the Victorian Aged Care Provider of the Year Award last year, hosted by the Aged & Community Services Australia.
