EASTON — The Diocese of Fall River is holding an event at Stonehill College on May 21 to introduce students and their families to the diocese's new Academy, and its initial academic and foundation partners.
The Academy, which was announced in February, is slated to open in the fall of 2019, offering a curriculum that fosters critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, according to a press release. It will serve Coyle and Cassidy middle and high schools in Taunton and Bishop Connolly in Fall River in their home locations, said diocese Superintendent Steve Perla.
The Stonehill College event is aimed at informing parents of the benefits the Academy will provide to students in these two initial affiliate schools, the release stated. The event will feature the academic partners providing support to ensure the success of the Academy: the University of Notre Dame, Boston College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Stonehill College and Regis College. The Academy is also partnering with two foundations: The Carney Family Charitable Foundation and The S.E.A.L. Foundation.
“As the Academy’s success builds, best practices and partnerships will be expanded to benefit the Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Fall River,” Perla said.
Partnerships with higher education, foundations and corporations will help the Academy enrich its offerings in advanced science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) opportunities, the release stated.
The innovative and effective instructional practices of the Academy will help prepare students to meet the educational and workforce needs of the 21st century in a Christ-centered atmosphere. It will offer support for faculty members to shift their instruction from traditional approaches to ones that emphasize personalized learning and project-based instruction across the curriculum, Perla said.
The informational Academy partnership event will take place May 21 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Stonehill College's McCarthy Auditorium in the May School of Arts and Sciences.
