NAGPUR: Maoists have set 27 vehicles of a road construction company on fire at Dadapur village near Purada in Kurkheda taluka on Wednesday wee hours. Sources in the police said the latest arson possibly was the mastermind of commanders Satish and Dinkar of Company 4 formation of the Maoists along with their local dalams of Kurkheda-Korchi-Khobramenda and Tippagarh among others. Around 150-200 Maoists had targeted the ongoing road construction work between Purada to Godalvahi as a part of their Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) with central and state sharing the budget allocation along with the contractor. At present, the work of the stretch between Purada-Malewada-Yerkad was underway. Police said the Maoists have torched around 11 trucks, earth movers, concrete mixing machines and other vehicles at the site adjoining Dadapur village. The two camp offices at the work site, too, were targeted.
The district administration and police had already issued directives to suspend work during the weeks when Maoists announces their special initiatives and also park vehicles near police station. The arson, perpetrated on the occasion of 'Maharashtra Day' as symbolic war against the government, has been also projected as a part of the reds' just concluded 'Martyrs' week' between April 22 and 28 in the memory of the 40 of their cadres losing life in police encounters at Kasnasur last year. DIG, Naxal range, Ankush Shinde said operations have been already launched from Gondia district to nab the Maoists. "We are verifying the situation," he said. Gadchiroli collector Shekhar Singh said the meetings of the contractors in the district would be soon organized later this week in collaboration with police department. The Maoists also have put up posters and banners across the place voicing strong dissent against Prime minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP-led government for destroying the natural resources of the tribal in the name of development. In December 2016, the Maoists had torched around 80 vehicles at Surjagarh site to protest mining work. This year too, Maoists had set around six vehicles of a road construction company on fire at Korchi taluka in north Gadchiroli. In 2014, the Maoists had set 27 vehicles of road construction work on fire in Dhanora tehsil disrupting the work between Gharanji and Pustola in north Gadchiroli. The reds have also issued blanket threats to civil contractors, especially the ones engaged in road construction, in Maoist-affected Gadchiroli.
