For these people, tattoos and piercings were simply not enough to curb their enthusiasm for body modification.
Taking their love for flesh alterations one step further, they employed Arizona-based Steve Haworth - dubbed the Modfather - to create three dimensional art on their body.
The so-called flesh engineer, from Phoenix, is world-renowned and has previously won the Guinness World Record for ‘most advanced body modification artist’.
His controversial works aren't easy to miss - one of his innovations include the 'Metal Mohawk' where spikes protrude from the scalp and modifications for Dennis Avner, the Nevada man who spent years trying to morph his body into that of a cat.
The body modification artist has also invented a line of implants to go under the skin to create elevated designs, such as crosses, skulls, and even a grenade.
This collection of photographs illustrates Mr Haworth's varied designs across his years in practice...

A raised skull design sits on the hand of one of Steve's customers (pictured left), while a cross is entrenched beneath the skin of a person's chest (pictured right) as well as a circle outline on their hand. These body modification enthusiasts opted to have implants placed under the skin of their hands, one (pictured left) sports a star design and a compass sign as well as three lumps, while another person (pictured right) has three circles protruding from their wrist

Three men have their face cut by a procedure that prevents the healing of the skin. One man (pictured left) has jagged lines across his cheek and nose, reaching towards his forehead. Another (pictured center) has three small bleeding scars cut below and above his eye, and a third (pictured right) has four diagonal scars over his eye, as if a tiger mauled him

A man poses with his elfin ears. Steve is famed in the close-knit community of extreme cosmetic surgery for his elfin ears prowess, a craze which sees sci-fi fans have the top of their cartilage sliced and sewed back together in a point. His operation costs $600 for both ears and takes about 20 minutes, but he is not allowed to use any anesthetic as he is not a doctor

A woman (pictured left) holds onto the edges of a triangle which has been embedded into her chest below a silver piercing. A dainty bow appears below the skin of a woman's torso, with three purple and silver piercings surrounding it

Giving it their all! These pair showcase their many modifications, including Steve's specialty of 'Metal Mohawks' as well as numerous piercings, tattoos, and elongated holes at the base of their ears

Two men rock horns at the top of their foreheads. Silicone implants can be repeatedly removed, with larger ones added when the skin is ready, leaving a more dramatic effect. However, users face several health risks, including infection, tissue resorption, nerve and muscle pressure, migration, and implant rejection, among others

Embracing a sea-vibe, these men not only have their skin inked blue but also have implants underneath their flesh to give the illusion of gills

Steve shows off his silver canine teeth. While distributing his talents to other people, the body modification artist also alters his own look. He has three vertical scars over his right eye, and a neodymium magnet in his fingertip

The body modification artist (pictured right) works in his lab on a new design. Speaking about his line of work, Steve (pictured) said: 'There are a lot of people out there who have an inner vision of themselves and want to express that to the world around them. I'm very happy to be an artist that can provide that kind of work'
