Aurangabad: A social activist has now decided to sit on hunger strike after police refused to file a complaint that he took to them against authorities at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marthwada University. The man has alleged that a woman student from Afghanistan who could not pass the examinations in the first and second years of her degree course in computer science has been admitted to the third year even though she has not passed examinations in earlier years.
Activist Azhar Khan said he attempted to get Begumpura police to register an offence, but they refused to do so. He began his hunger strike in front of the police commissionerate on Tuesday.
Khan said he had obtained documents through Right to Information that show the foreign student was granted admission in the third year of the course in violation of norms laid down by University Grants Commission. The student is enrolled at a college in the city affiliated to BAMU.
Khan told TOI, “University authorities issued a special notification for ensuring that this girl gets admission in the third year. There is forgery and cheating committed in doing so.”
As he sat on hunger strike, senior police officers met him. Deputy commissioner of police (zone-I) Nikesh Khatmode Patil summoned the inspector of the station that Khan had approached and asked him to check facts of the matter and register an offence, in case that was needed.
Begumpura inspector Rajshri Adhe said notices had already been issued to the college and university, seeking clarification over allegations made by Khan. “We are yet to receive any reply,” he said.
