Mumbai: A special court on Tuesday convicted a for demanding illegal gratification of Rs 5000 for providing special treatment to a jail inmate. The special court has sentenced the constable to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
Special Judge PP Jadhav, presiding over the special court to hear cases of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), convicted Santosh Pawar, who was posted at the Thane Central Jail as a police constable at the relevant time. Pawar was arrested in 2014 after the ACB, Thane was moved by parents of an undertrial, lodged in the central prison.
The parents alleged that Pawar demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 in exchange for a ‘special treatment’ which he claimed, he would give to their son.
Having considered the material on record, special Judge Jadhav concluded that Pawar was guilty of demanded illegal gratification and convicted him under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25000 on Pawar.
