LUCKNOW: Five members of a family, including a six-month-old girl, were charred to death after a stockpile of small cooking gas cylinders caught fire in a two-storey house in Ram vihar Phase II colony in Indiranagar area of the sate capital on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as OP Singh (6O), Sumit (40), Julie (42) and her six-months-old daughter Baby. Identity of one person is yet to be ascertained, said the police.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 6am, when due to a short circuit the house caught fire. The flames engulfed the room-cum-kitchen in no time and reduced the house to ashes.
Panic erupted in the locality and locals rushed to the spot and tried to douse the fire. Ajay, a local, said that the fire tenders took time to reach the spot as the house is located in a narrow lane.
CFO VK Singh said that six fire tenders were sent and the fire was doused in an hour.
SP (trans-Gomti) Amit Kumar said that prima facie it appears that the family used to run an illegal workshop of cooking gas and cylinders inside the house.
