Former Minnesota cop found guilty of murder

A Minneapolis court found former police officer Mohamed Noor guilty of murder on Tuesday (April 30).

Noor fatally shot Australian Justine Ruszczyk Damond outside her home in 2017, which sparked international outrage.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says he expects Noor to face 12-and-a-half years in prison for a murder charge, and four years for a manslaughter charge when he's sentenced.

But when it occurs, it is our job to let the public know in extreme cases to bring charges and prosecution." Noor had testified in court that he was acting in self defense.

On the night of the shooting Damond had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault near her home.

Noor said that when he and his partner arrived, they heard a loud noise.

His partner then went for his gun but couldn't get it out of the holster.

Noor said quote "he turned to me with fear in his eyes." Then he caught sight of a blonde-haired woman outside the car window near his partner.

He says she raised her arm and in what he called a "split-second decision," he responded by reaching across his partner and shooting her.

The shooting led to the resignation of Minneapolis' police chief and the creation of stricter department policy on body cameras.

Noor and his partner did not turn on their body cameras when the shooting happened- meaning investigators lacked video evidence.

According to Damond's personal website she owned a life-coaching company- and was engaged to be married that summer.
