New Justice Party founder A.C. Shanmugam who was fielded as AIADMK candidate for Vellore Parliamentary constituency said he had asked for the President’s intervention in announcing early polls in the district.
‘Failed to convince’
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said that his efforts to convince the Election Commission to announce early poll dates for Vellore has failed and now he sought the President’s assistance.
In this regard, he had sent a letter to the President on Monday, he added.
The Vellore voters were denied an opportunity to elect a Prime Minister of their own choice, Mr. Shanmugam said.
While police personnel and government staff on election duty had exercised their franchise through postal ballots, the election for the constituency was rescinded by the EC, he said.
Taluk-level meeting
Mr. Shanmugam said he would participate in the taluk level functionaries meeting to be held in the next few days to work out a new strategy.
He was fielded by the AIADMK on its ‘two leaves’ symbol in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency.
He submitted a representation to the Chief Election Commissioner last Thursday, urging him to hold early polls in the constituency.
The Election Commission had cancelled the polls in Vellore following an Income Tax search and seizure of over ₹11.5 crore from the house of an aide of DMK treasurer Durai Murugan, whose son Kathir Anand was in the fray.
