Delhi HC directs EC to file affidavit on powers to regulate spend by parties

Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission of India (EC) to clear its stand on the powers it has to ensure political parties disclose their funding and expenditure details. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice AJ Bhambhani told the EC it has a final opportunity to file an affidavit on how it intends to ensure implementation of guidelines regarding disclosure of expenditure by political parties.
HC cautioned it that failure to comply may invite orders from the court on the petition, as it noted that the matter has been pending for the last five years and the direction to EC in February to file the affidavit has not been complied with till date. The matter is posted for next hearing on July 16.
