Coimbatore: In a move to ensure fair poll, the rural police will deploy at least 2,000 police personnel for the Sulur byelection. The rural police have already received the assistance of three companies (240 personnel) of central industrial security force, two companies (160 personnel) of Tamil Nadu special police for election duty.
As many as 600 law-and-order police personnel will work for Sulur bypoll to be held on May 19. Sulur assembly has 324 booths, of which over 160 booths are vulnerable. The police decided to deploy central armed police for the vulnerable booths to prevent untoward incidents.
Candidates are allowed to withdraw their nominations till 3 pm on Thursday, a few hours before the the final list of candidates will be announced. Symbols for the independent candidates also be announced on Thursday evening.
As of now, over 1,000 police personnel are working for security. “We expect at least 1,000 more police personnel, mostly from paramilitary force, for the duty in May second week. They will be deployed in all the vulnerable booths,” said a police officer.
