The city received moderate to heavy rainfall over a short period of time on Tuesday evening due to the impact of Cyclone Fani over Bay of Bengal.
The IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was disrupted owing to the rains after the toss. It finally began at 11.30 p.m. and each team was given five overs.
Geeta Agnihotri, Director, Meterological Centre, Bengaluru, said while the cyclone was yet to hit the Indian coast, it had a fringe effect on south interior Karnataka causing rains in the area including in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) recorded rainfall intensity in the range of 50 mm and 152 mm. Sampangiramnagar recorded the highest intensity of rainfall at 152 mm. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorm activity for the next two days for the city and south interior Karnataka.
Heavy rains and flooding threw traffic out of gear during peak hours. Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun personally oversaw efforts to drain out water from the roads. BBMP officials said only one tree had fallen during the rains on Tuesday, in Banaswadi. However, there were reports of homes being flooded.
Deepthy Shekhar, a resident of Garuthman Park near Lalbagh, said houses in her locality including hers had been flooded owing to the rains on Tuesday evening, due to a backflow from the adjoining drain. “The BBMP and BWSSB blame each other for the problem and both do not respond to our woes,” she complained.
