152 candidates in the fray for May 19 byelection

After the scrutiny of nominations filed by candidates for the May 19 bypolls to Aravakurichi, Ottapidaram, Sulur and Tirupparankundram Assembly constituencies, a total of 152 candidates are in the fray.

While a total of 256 nominations were submitted till Monday — the last date for filing of nominations — 104 of them were rejected during the scrutiny of nominations on Tuesday.

A total of 68 candidates, including 51 independents, would fight it out in the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency, while 44 candidates will be contesting the Tirupparankundram seat. Twenty-two candidates are in the fray in Sulur, and 18 in the Ottapidaram (reserved) constituency.

In four constituencies, eight candidates are contesting on behalf of recognised political parties and there are 113 independents.

Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said a total of 13 companies of paramilitary personnel were being mobilised for the bypoll.
