LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will now use wet garbage collected from door-to-door to produce fertilizer.
For this purpose, LMC has decided to construct 10 material recovery centres (MRCs) in the city. The fertilizer produced in these centres would be used in LMC parks and the surplus would be sold in markets. According to LMC officials, around 500 metric tonne of wet waste is generated daily in the city.
LMC has recently issued an order to Eco-Green, the company responsible for door-to-door garbage collection in city, for collecting dry and wet garbage. The dry waste like plastic, polythene, glass and thermocol would be sent to garbage treatment plant at Shivri. While waste like uncooked food, fruits, vegetable peels will be sent to MRC points for preparing fertilizer.

According to LMC estimates, they can produce up to 700kg fertilizer daily. A budget of Rs 2 crore will proposed in the next house meeting.
An official in LMC said, “These MRC centres will have several compost pits, which would be used for producing fertilizers. We will construct these centres in all the eight zones of the city.”
