2 firefighters hurt in Naraina factory blaze

A fire in two adjacent factories that manufacture and store chemicals left two firemen injured in west Delhi’s Naraina Monday.

The two factories were owned by the same person and did not have the necessary no objection certificate, Atul Garg, chief fire officer (Delhi Fire Services), said. No civilian was injured in the blaze. “Naraina remains closed for work on Mondays. So, there was nobody in the buildings,” said Garg.The blaze was reported to the fire department at 11.37am from a four-storey factory in Naraina Industrial Area. “The blaze soon spread to the adjacent factory. One of the factories is used for producing chemicals while the other stores it,” Garg said.

The strong wind in the early afternoon made the fire spread quickly, Garg said.

While the firefighters were trying to douse the flames, there was a blast in the first floor of the building that stored the chemicals, Garg said.

“Station officer Aman Kumar suffered burns to his legs and thigh. A constable, Naresh, suffered an arm fracture after falling off the building,” Garg said. The injured firemen were rushed to a hospital where their condition is stable.

A total of 40 fire tenders were used to control the Naraina blaze. It was finally brought under control at 5.20pm, but the cooling operations would continue through the night, a fire officer said.

In another incident, a fire was reported from east Delhi’s Mansarovar where a two-storey building that produces plastic products went up in flames around 3.30pm. Whether it had the NOC is yet to be checked, said the officer. In this case, the temporary structure housing electrical wires and gunny bags caught fire. No one was hurt in the incident and 11 fire tenders were used to douse the flames by 5.50pm, the fire department said.
